Breathe

Single Release: ‘Breathe’ March 28, 2025

For the greatest tragedy of them all, Is never to feel the burning light – Oscar Wilde

A note from the artist:

So Icarus fell, but at least he flew. This small sentence sums up the essence of my song ‘Breathe’. Icarus is a story for the ages, a tale that tells of human nature, of failure, of the rise and fall. It is a universal feeling to feel that you have wings of wax, to fear you are far too close to the sun, yet still you rise to meet it.

Breathe begins with a single note pedalled on the piano and a looped melodic bass line that is texturally dark & gritty in contrast with the closeness of my soft vocal, I am almost speaking. The production by Ken Allars follows the trajectory of the story within the song, beginning with a timidity to fly, a ‘dare I even try’ sort of sentiment.

‘Breathe’ builds to cinematic choral heights while the lead vocal transitions from a feathery lightness into a heart-wrenching chest voice, with all the cracks and emotion you would imagine of someone finally letting go. The song comes to a close with the same grace it began with, and as the lyrics spell out the inevitable fall that we all will know, a quiet confidence exudes in the understanding that even at our darkest, we are loved.
